Apprenticeship Program
KWCP’s apprenticeship program is a highly selective educational program that prepares its participants for a specific trade and is accredited through the NC Department of Labor. All participants who successfully complete the program receive a federally recognized Journeyman’s card. This is a rare opportunity in North Carolina, and the benefits to the employee are vast. Apprentices received in house training as well as paid training at local community colleges in a wide variety of subjects.
- Assessments of capability will be made on all potential apprentices in reading comprehension, math and mechanical aptitude.
- All selections are predicated on management approval, based on assessment results.
- Apprentices will be placed in one of three tracks:
- - Machining/plug & die (3 year program, $16/hr minimum finish pay)
- - Maintenance (3 year program, $18/hr minimum finish pay)
- - Production (2 year program, $14/hr minimum finish pay)
- New hires will begin the program at $9 per hour.
- Existing employees will begin the program at their current pay level.
- Apprentices will receive graduated raises throughout program, based upon satisfactory attendance, grades, and progress. A C average in all classes and 90% attendance are required for all classes; failure to sustain these goals may result in an apprentice being removed from the program.
- Apprentices will be compensated for all class time and working time (travel time/time out of class or work are not compensated).
- Tuition and fees for outside classes for apprentices will be paid at 100% by KWCP to the school upon registration by the apprentice in that class. Reimbursement for books will be made at 50% upon presentation by the apprentice of invoice.
